Class 7 Autumn Term 2018
Resource Base Autumn Term
Welcome back to school for the Autumn Term! I hope you and your children all had a wonderful Summer together and enjoyed your family time - I know I did! I am a now really looking excited to be back to school to teach our lovely children again.
Our topic for this term will be “Africa” and we will learn about this through lots of Art, Design Technology, Music and Geography. We will start this new topic with the question “Where would you rather live, Halton or Africa?” By the end of this Term after lots of learning our children should be able to explain where they would rather choose and give reasons why!
In English we will be reading a few fabulous books on an African theme. These will be 'The Leopard’s Drum”, “Meercat Mail.”, “Bringing the Rains to Kapiti Plain” and “Masai and I. We will be writing descriptions, stories, poems, fact-files about African animal and instruction texts. Our children will also continue with the Read Write Inc daily lessons to learn our phonics and develop writing skills.
In our Maths lessons we will be focussing on number games exploring place value, addition, subtraction and some multiplication.
In Geography, we will be looking at different countries in Africa and learning about some of the main features such as Mount Kilimanjaro and the Masai Mara and grasslands. We will focus on comparing Africa to England to develop reasoning skills.
For History, we will do a mini-topic at the end of the term where we will find out what Christmas used to be like for people in the past.
In Science we will be answering the question “Are all animals the same?” As an ongoing topic, we will be tracking and observing seasonal changes in the environment through the Autumn and into Winter. We will also be looking at the different habitats of African creatures.
This term the children will continue to develop their personal, social and health skills. Our first focus will be on hope and what this means. We will be looking at our hopes for the future and getting the children to set themselves some targets.
In RE will be learning about the practices of Jewish people and what is like to be a Jew. We will also be studying Christian stories from the Bible including the Christmas story in detail.
If you have any concerns or issues that you wish to discuss regarding your child, please contact the school and I will be happy to call you back. Oh and one final request! We plan to do some junk modelling of African animals in the next few weeks so could you please save and start bringing in clean cartons and boxes?
