Year 1 2018 - 2019
Year 1 teacher
A very warm welome to year 1!
Year 1 is taught by Mrs Kohler and supported by Miss Lewis.
Topic: During our topic lessons we will be investigating the question 'Why can't a meerkat live in the North Pole?'. We will be reading the book ‘Meerkat Mail’. It is about a meerkat called Sunny who travels to different places and sends postcards home to his family telling them all about his adventures. We will look at the places from the story and see how they are different to Runcorn and the North Pole. We will compare the weather including the temperature, rainfall and wind. Children will have the opportunity to use the story to inspire their own writing.
English: In English we will be working in our Read Write Inc. groups to practice reading and spelling using our phonics. We will learn a new sound everyday and practice our sounds by reading words and books. Children will also be reading with a teacher 1:1 everyday. Please ensure your child is reading at home everyday. Reading books will be changed on Mondays and Thursdays.
Maths: Our first mathematics strand for this half term will be place value. We will be counting numbers accurately. We will be representing numbers in lots of different ways, such as number lines, ten frames, cubes, bead strings and maths pictures. We will also be comparing numbers and using the symbols < = > to show if they are less, equal, or greater.
Science: In Science we will be looking at different types of animals. We will learn the difference between a herbivore, carnivore and omnivore. We will compare animals and sort them into categories such as mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles.
Music: Our topic for this term is the ‘Building Bricks’ of Music: Loud and Soft, High and Low, Long and Short, Sound and Silence. We will be learning about them through Music games, singing songs and playing percussion instruments.
P.E.: We will be learning lots of different shapes, balances and movements in gymnastics. Children will be using these elements to create their own sequences to share with the class. Children will also learn about warming up and cooling down before and after exercise.
R.E.: In R.E. we will be focusing on Christianity. We will investigate the questions ‘Does God want Christians to look after the world?’ We will make our own creations and think about how we would like others to look after them.
PSHCE: In PSHCE we will be thinking about how we can make a happy school and learning how to be a good friend. We will also be looking at the British values of respect, tolerance, individual liberty and rule of law. We will vote for our school council representitive to help make decisions about our school.
Art/D&T: During our art lessons we will be studying the artist Mondrian. Just like Mondrian we will be creating artwork using the three primary colours. We will also choose colours to create a warm or cool painting.
Computing: In computing we will learn all about keeping ourselves safe on the internet. We will talk about cyber bulling and what to do if you see or read something that upsets you on the internet.
Please ensure your child brings their book bag and reading journal into school every day. P.E kits need to be in school each Monday. P.E will take place on Monday and Friday afternoons. . All P.E. kit and uniform should be labelled to avoid any missing items of clothing.
Snack money is £1.75 a week. As of Monday 17th of September, please could we have all snack money on a Monday. This will allow staff to support children’s morning learning on the other days. If you think this may be a problem, please let myself or Miss. Lewis know.
Spelling homework will be sent home on Mondays. Our spelling test will be on the Friday.
HOMEWORK QUEST Your challenge is to make a model of the North Pole! Why not research some of the animals that live there and add them to your model? Projects are due in by Thursday 18th October.
I am available at the beginning and end of the school day to answer any questions. If you would like to arrange a meeting to discuss any concerns you have with regards to your child's learning, please let me know. I look forward to working in partnership with families to ensure the children have a happy and successful year. Thank you for your ongoing support.
