Year 5/6 2023-2024

Miss Edwards

Year 5/6 class teacher

Welcome to Year 5/6!

"Learning and growing together!”

WOW, didn't our Spring term fly by? As the year continues, I feel so grateful that I am able to facilitate the Year 5 and Year 6 pupils’ learning. So far this academic year, I have thoroughly enjoyed helping the children to grow academically, socially and emotionally. There are still plenty of new concepts and content to be introduced in upper key stage 2, and an abundance of memorable, learning experiences too.

Each day, we expect our pupils to show our ACORN (ambition, creativity, ownership, resilience and nurture) values in all that they do, whilst showing mutual respect and tolerance to one another.

To view our Year 5/6 curriculum overview, please see the files section at the bottom of this page. This document will outline the topics for each term, for each area of the curriculum. In addition to this, you will find key dates for the term, the Year 5/6 Knowledge Organisers and Summer Homework Quest!

Key Information

Uniform

Our pupils should arrive at school in full school uniform, including suitable all-black footwear. Please ensure that your child's uniform is clearly labelled with their name. We will always encourage children to be responsible for their own belongings while in school.

Reading

At Palace Fields, we have set the expectation that children read at home every day and that they bring their reading books to school with them every day so that we can continue to build a positive reading culture in Year 5/6. Our library is open to the children each break time for them to take out and, once finished, swap books.

Homework

Year 5: Homework will be set every Thursday with the expectation that it will be handed in the following Tuesday.

Year 6: Up until SATs, Year 6 are expected to be completing regular revision from the packs which were sent out before the half-term. Each week, at the very minimum, I would advise completing a piece of reading, writing and SPaG. A little and often approach is highly recommended. I will be checking in with each child on a 1:1 basis to see where they are up to and to provide verbal feedback in the coming weeks.

Year 5/6: Alongside our homework each week, I will be setting a stand-alone homework quest that should be completed over the course of a few weeks; details can be found at the bottom of this page, along with our curriculum map!

PE

The children will be developing their knowledge and skills in Tag Rugby (on Tuesdays) and Dance (on Thursdays). Children are expected to have a full PE kit for every lesson (e.g. plain white top, navy/black shorts and trainers/pumps).

Snack

Snack is available in school (milk and toast). If your child is having snack, we ask that it is brought in on Monday morning in an envelope with your child's name and the amount clearly shown. For both milk and toast, it is £2.50 for the week (50p per day).

Water Bottles

We encourage children to bring a bottle of water to school daily to keep them hydrated throughout their lessons. The children will have many opportunities throughout the day to have a drink of water. Please remember that juice is not permitted in water bottles stored in class but may be consumed with their snack at break time and packed lunch at lunchtime.
